Fifteen

Last night was the first night I was able to get a good rest.

It’s nice to have Julian not only as a mentor but as a friend I can rely on as well. And if I’m as serious about MMA as I want to be, I need to follow through with his advice and leave Jax out of my career. It’s the right thing to do.

I wonder how Jax is going to take it. Probably not well, given his initial response. Perhaps I shouldn’t be with someone like that. I used to think he wouldn’t break up with me over something as trivial as this, but now I’m not sure.

As morning light filters through my window, I stare up at my bedroom ceiling, ruminating on the real possibility of having to break up with Jax. My heart clenches with hurt just thinking about it.

The past months with him have made me the happiest I’ve ever been. I don’t know if I’d survive a heartbreak like that.

I don’t allow the thought to take hold of my mind. Not when I’ve got a ton of things to do today. Right on cue, the alarm in my phone buzzes that it’s 7:30 a.m., giving me a small window of time to commute into the city and report for work at the gym when it opens at 8:30. I hop out of bed and leap across the room for a change of clothes, not needing to worry about making a ruckus this early since Beth is away at cheer camp until tomorrow. I make my way to the bathroom, and as I wait for the shower to heat up, I check my phone for any messages to reply to. There are none from Jax, a couple from Julian running through my working hours for the week as well as my training schedule, and one from Dakota, which puts a smile on my face.

Remember my show is this Sat! Don’t forget! I can practically hear her chirping with excitement through the message.

I’ll be there! I shoot back, matching her tone.

After a quick shower, I get dressed with lightning speed.

Stuffing all my MMA gear into my bag, I scramble down the stairs and leap into the living room to bid goodbye to my mom.

“Mom!” I yell, nearly tripping over the carpet. “I’m leaving now, don’t wait up for me tonight!” But instead of finding my mother, I spot a woman I don’t recognize sitting on the couch, clicking her feet together nervously. “Uh, who are you?” I ask uneasily.

Her body jolts with surprise. “Oh!” she says, looking like her soul has dropped out of her body. “Hello there.” The slender figure rises from her seat awkwardly. With thick dark hair, a small round face, and a pair of naturally full lips, she’s the complete opposite of my mom, yet equal in beauty. She looks like the kind of woman you’d find in Architectural Digest, with her sprayed-back hair, beige turtleneck, culottes, and leather boots. It’s not cold out right now, so it strikes me as odd that she’s dressed like that.
